| The Costa Blanca Spain, attracts millions of tourists every year. It starts in the north with Javea and Denia two towns either side of the Montgo mountain and reaching down as far as Torrevieja on the coast and Elche further inland. Torrevieja is approx. 35 kilometres south of Alicante's international airport, El Altet and is located at the southern end of the Valencian community. It boasts Europe's biggest salt flats teaming with bird life. Inland there is Elche which is considered to be the palm tree capital of the world. The carretera nacional (N-332) goes all the way along the coast, so reaching your holiday home, villa or hotel is very easy. Or you can take the motorway, the A-7 As you leave Alicante airport along the N-332, the first large town you come to is Villajoyosa (or The Joyful Town) is approx. 30Kms from Alicante and about 10Kms from Benidorm. Todays economy relies on fishing and chocolate, so don't forget to visit the chocolate museum. A must for all chocoholics! The next stop takes us to Benidorm, probably the most famous town on the Costa Blanca with its latest attraction "Terra Mitica", Spain's largest theme park. It is approx. 50 Kms from Alicante and approx. 120 Kms from Valencia, Altea is our next stop. This small town has been largely unaffected by too much commercialisation. Calpe comes next. The main feature of Calpe is the towering rock of Ifach which reaches an impressive 332m and is now a nature reserve. Moving north we find Moraira-Teulada where the residential areas are surrounded by more than 2,000 hectares of green belt. Inland from Moraira we have Benissa, famous for its beautiful cathedral and its old city centre. Next stop is Gata de Gorgos. If you like cane furniture, this is the town for you. Then we come to Javea. With its 25 kilometres of coastline, there are a variety of water sports from sailing and windsurfing to scuba diving. The other side of the Montgo is Denia. It has all the usual tourist attractions (museums, castle etc), plus a wide range of water sports activities (windsurfing, sailing, diving) for the more adventurous amongst us. |
